Is it possible to change from .wav sound to .mp3?

To save bandwidth I would like to use .mp3 which i find easier to work with.

Is it possible to change the code to play short mp3s instead of .wavs?

I grepped through the code buy I didn't seen any match for "new_user"[.wav]

Also, when the same user chats back in say 30 minutes later, i don't hear the
sound play again as it seems the session is already established.  Do I always
need to delete the session?  If so, how can I move the red end session button
to the awaiting visitors panel?

I wouldn't recommend that, because your visitors can use different browsers. Not all of them are capable to play mp3s. Moreover these sounds are loaded lazily and do not affect the speed.
