Resources, Time And Experiences

I am considering adding a chat type application to my website as I've seen others that have it. I get a lot of phone calls from visitors to my site inquiring about my products, and I'm trying to decide whether this type of feature might be more efficient than taking calls.

But, I'm also wondering about the time it might take up.  What are other's experiences? I can't always be beside my computer, but I can always have my cordless phone nearby.

For those who have installed this or other similar features on their website, what is your experience? Do visitors prefer to chat live than to phone? What are the drawbacks to having this installed on a website? I'm thinking if I can't be available much of the time, it could also end up being frustrating for some visitors who expect someone to be there.
